Turbine Installation Guide

Step 1: Turbine Removal

Insert bur into the handpiece head. Unscrew back cap with appropriate back cap wrench. Remove turbine from the handpiece head by applying pressure to the bur.

Step 2: Inspect Handpiece

Examine handpiece head for damage or dents. If you observe damage, do not install the new turbine. Have the handpiece repaired by a qualified repair facility. The new turbine will be damaged if you proceed.

Step 3: Remove O-Rings and Other Components

Remove any remaining o'rings out of the handpiece back cap and inside the handpiece head. Remove any other existing parts as well, such as wave washers, shims, spacers, or broken bearing parts. Use an explorer to insure parts are removed, as they often hide in blackened debris.

Step 4: Clean Handpiece

If possible, ultra sonic clean the handpiece shell with a handpiece friendly degreaser for 15 minutes, flush handpiece when done. If you do not use an ultrasonic cleaner, spray handpiece cleaner into the handpiece head. Use a cotton swab to remove any debris left in the head. Using air, blow out the handpiece head to remove any cotton fibers.

Step 5: Attach Back Cap

As a general rule, you should attach the back cap onto the new turbine (if not already attached). If it does not attach easily, place a drop of oil and spread it around the back o'ring/bearing. Carefully insert the back bearing into the back cap, gently rocking it from side to side. Too much force will cut the o'ring or damage the back bearing.

Step 6: Install Preparation

Make sure that new o'rings, wave washers, and spacers are seated in the proper position on the turbine or in the handpiece head. These parts and their positioning depend on your particular handpiece/turbine make and model. For example, if you had to remove an o'ring out of a groove in the handpiece head in Step 3, then you will need to put a new o'ring in its place at this time.

Step 7: Turbine Installation

Holding the turbine upright (bur pointed up), insert turbine into the handpiece head. Thread back cap into the handpiece until finger tight. Grasp the shipping bur and gently move the turbine in a side to side motion to help seat the o'ring. If any resistance occurs while threading the back cap, unscrew 1/4 turn and then continue to thread. Rotate shipping bur to ensure that the turbine moves freely. If not, unscrew back cap and repeat this step. Never force the back cap if resistance occurs.

Step 8: Lubricate Turbine (For Lube Type Turbines Only)

Place 3 drops of oil in the drive air tube and operate handpiece.

Troubleshooting after Turbine Installation

1. The turbine does not spin freely after installation

This is usually caused by improper installation. Most likely, the turbine has rolled, moved or damaged the front o-ring during installation. Sometimes, this occurs when old components are left in the handpiece head during turbine removal. In cases where springs and/or shims are placed on front of the turbine during installation, they could settle incorrectly and cause resistance. In all cases, re-install the turbine, do not run the handpiece until corrected.

2. The turbine sounds loud or runs rough after installation

This is usually caused by o-ring misplacement or damage, or improper back cap placement. In these cases, re-install the turbine. It is very important to replace o-rings with new ones, worn o-rings could cause this problem. Also, debris left in the handpiece head or head damage could cause this problem. Try removing the turbine and cleaning the handpiece as described in the installation instructions. If the handpiece head has damage or dents, the handpiece must be repaired before using. Damaged handpiece heads will damage turbines.

3. The back cap gets hot during use

In these cases, stop using the handpiece. Re-install the turbine to ensure that it is seated properly. If the turbine is not assembled in the proper position on the spindle, or has been moved, the back of the spindle could rub against the back cap. Continued use will damage the turbine and could cause discomfort to patients. Also, your push button back cap could be stuck in the down position, which would then rub against the spindle. In this case, remove the back cap and clean. If the back cap continues to stick, it must be replaced.

4. I'm having turbine failures

Improper maintenance procedures is the number one reason for turbine failures. Do not over temperature your handpieces during sterilization cycles (not to exceed 275 f). Handpieces should be flushed prior to sterilization to remove debris. Handpieces should be lubricated after sterilization (maintenance free turbines should be lubricated from time to time to lubricate components such as o-rings and spindle assemblies).

5. My handpieces are running slow

Try removing the turbine and cleaning the inside of the handpiece head, debris could cause slow performance. Check to ensure that your air pressure is properly gauged at the chair unit. Try replacing the gasket at the back end of the handpiece, a worn gasket will cause air to escape out the back of the handpiece.

6. Warranty

If your turbine fails within the warranty period due to defects in materials or workmanship you may be entitled to a replacement unit.
